Grimm let out an annoyed growl as the ward spell forced him to sit outside the mausoleum again.

“I’ll be right there,” Nox said.  She and Loki had their heads together, sitting on top of the crypt with the notes held between them.  She handed Loki the papers and came outside.  “Any news?”

“I caught up with your great great uncle Lysander.  He is the most reliable of the ghosts, which isn’t saying much, but at least he has a decent sense of time. It looks like the wards went up around the mansion about two hours after we left, and the ghosts were sent out about a half hour after that,” Grimm said. “The only instruction they were given was to patrol the roads until the master of the House sends them back to their graves.”

Nox tapped a finger on her lips as she worked out the time difference.  “Okay. I think we have about 10 hours then. Crud.”

“Any luck with the notes?”

Loki came out to join them.  “A little. These are all names of books,” he said, pointing to several capitalized words.  “And these may be numbers, although which ones is anyone’s guess.”

Grimm’s ears perked up. “Do you want me to go search the library?”

Nox gave him a mischievous smile. “Yep. You’ll need to raid mother’s private collection. Brand can get you the key.”

The hound’s tongue lolled out in a big, doggy grin. “Serenna is going to have kittens when she finds out I was in there.”

“Forget kittens, she’s going to have full grown cats. This is the second time in two days that you’ve stepped in to save her life.”

He snorted. “I’m not doing it for her sake.”

Ooh, curiouser and curiouser…

Grimm and Serenna have never gotten along (to put it mildly!). If helping find a cure for the firethorn means saving her as well, Grimm will do it, but he won’t be gracious about it.
