This micro-fic is part of an ongoing web serial, which will be updated every hour today from noon till midnight, when the regular weekly #fridayflash gets posted.  If you are new to Nox and Grimm, you can Click Here to read from the beginning.

Nox stood facing a glazed crock that rested on the top of the tomb. “Summoning jar, test one, pottery vessel.”

She motioned Loki to move behind her aura shield, and began to read out the torturously long phrases of the spell.  The pebbles she had lined up next to the jar lifted up, spun once around it and smashed into it with enough force to make the jar explode with a resounding THUMP.  The mausoleum rattled as the shockwave spread out, and Nox’s shield crackled and spat electric blue sparks.

Loki started laughing. “See? You do need a blast proof workspace!”

“Now why did it do that?” she said, frowning at her mother’s notes. “I wonder if that word means glass? Or maybe stone?  Something with greater material strength would make sense.” She dusted off the crypt and sat down on it. “I’ll have to strengthen my shield though, just in case.”

“Maybe your shield caused the problem.” Loki said.

“No, elemental and sorcerous energies won’t react to each other. I’ve tested that before.”

“Maybe not, but you did say that sorcery has a lot to do with belief. If you are starting out with a shield, you already believe it could go wrong.”

Her shoulders slumped.  “What If I can’t do this? I’m only half-human, and I’ve never tried more than a cantrip. I certainly haven’t studied anything this advanced.”

He cupped her chin in his hand, and tipped her head up so that she had to look at him. “You can do this. I have seen you do more, with less energy than most full-blooded elementals would dare to try.”

“But this has nothing to do with the elements. It’s a different kind of energy, with its own rules,” she said. “Wait. Different rules.” She turned her head away, thinking furiously. “Oh bugger, I was shielding the wrong thing! It exploded because I didn’t contain the energy!”  She pulled a page out of the notes and pointed to a phrase halfway down the page. “Jaques de Fleury is a book on powering circles.  I don’t have the oomph to power one of these, but what good is technomancy if you can’t bodge two types of energy together, right?”

Loki smiled. “I have no idea, but it sounds like you are on to something. What do you need?”

“Books. Lots of them.”

Bodging magics? Careful, Nox!

techtigger - January 14, 2011

Bodging magics and science together is what technomancers do! 😀 It’s also why Grimm says she’s crazy, but it’s a good kind of crazy
